The jurist Jean-Gabriel Castel, professor of international law at Osgoode Hall and Glendon, died on December 30 in Toronto, aged 95. Born in Nice between the wars, he left his mark on the 20th and 21st centuries, through his social commitment, his courage and his qualities as a law professor, notably in Toronto.
​
Living in Canada since 1954, he is a former Resistance fighter, war veteran, professor emeritus, lawyer and world-renowned expert in international law.
​
Generous husband, father, grandfather and friend.
​
Despite his young age, he joined the Resistance in 1943.
​
On August 28, 1944, he contributed to the liberation of Nice by fighting in the ranks of the Resistance. His actions were rewarded with the Médaille du Combattant Volontaire de la Résistance (1945), the Croix du Combattant (1945), the Médaille Commémorative de la Guerre 1939-1945, the Croix du Combattant de l'Europe (1993) and the Médaille d'honneur de la Fédération des AnciensCombattants.

The monument
AMICITIA France-Canada is the national monument that is erected in Ottawa at the Beechwood National Cemetery to recognize more than four centuries of shared history and heritage and over 90 years of official diplomatic relations between France and Canada.
